April 11, 2014 - Center for the Arts at VA Tech presents Tomáš Kubínek, Certified Lunatic and Master of the Impossible!

Meet the one and only Professor Tomáš Kubínek, a virtuoso vaudevillian who brings us an utterly joyous experience you’ll remember for a lifetime.

His feats on stage mix clowning, magic, acrobatics, aerial stunts, and improvisations that will make you smile. Described as a cross between Red Skelton, Christopher Lloyd, and Victor Borge, the Czech-born Kubínek will leave you clutching your sides with laughter. Recommended for ages six and older.

Admission Fee: $20-$30 general admission, $10 students with ID and children 18 and under

Sustain our Water Supply

April 13, 2014 ~ Sustain Floyd presents an important film: Blue Gold at the Floyd Country Store.

This documentary by Sam Bozzo presents a powerful picture of the state of our water supply. The film addresses why it is important to understand the factors affecting the quality and supply of our water, and what ordinary citizens can do to keep it free and fairly-shared.  The showing of Blue Gold will be followed by a discussion of the water topics that affect us closer to home.

Doors open at 6:00p for a “Goodbye Winter” supper.  The film starts around 6:30p. Film tickets available at the foor for a donation of $5.  Supper available for an additional donation.

April 13, 2014 ~ The Moonshine Express in the town of Rocky Mount, additional date on April 13!

It's not against the law to TALK about making liquor, and that's what we do!

Hear true tales of likker in 'The Moonshine Capital of The World.' More than 75 characters & interpreters tell the story of moonshining in Franklin County. Tales of prohibition, antique barrooms, likker makers and drinkers.

Ride a vintage tour bus, stopping at multiple scenes around the county seat of Rocky Mount. Meet folks from both sides of the law, hear from the most famous lady rum runner of her time and hear "church women" decry Demon Rum.

Choose your departure time for an approximate 1 1/2-hour tour. Rain or, well, Shine!

Advance ticket purchase recommended.

Bring an instrument or just enjoy the sounds of Bluegrass and Old-Time Mountain Music played by local musicians. Get a true taste of real American Music at the Grill! April 18, 2014 ~ Friday Night Jamboree at The Floyd Country Store, 6:30pm, additional dates April 18 and April 25!

The Floyd Country store was constructed around 1910, and has been an important part of the community ever since.

The Jamboree starts every Friday at 6:30pm with an hour of bluegrass gospel music. At 7:30pm, dancers hit the floor, flatfooting and clogging to the music of regional Bluegrass or Old-Time bands. The music and dancing continues until at least 10:30pm, with an occasional two-step, square dance, or waltz thrown in for fun.

If the crowd is willing, at 10:30pm we'll round up one of the jamming groups that can be found picking outside or upstairs in the store, and they will play for the crowd until around 11:30pm.
